After much deliberation and consideration, our panel of judges have decided on the top 5 finalists for this year’s REIM Investor of the Year Award. Each of our finalists will have the chance to prove their worth at our Gala event on the 22nd of May at the Bryanston Country Club. But first, let’s introduce them:
Vanessa de Pinho
Vanessa owns six properties in Gauteng, ranging from townhouses to freestanding homes. Her property journey began in 1998, when she purchased her primary residence. In 2007, she dove into the investment world by purchasing her first buy-to-let. Asked if she could start all over again and do things differently, Vanessa says that she wishes she could have started her investment journey at a younger age. After all, she’s clear on the fact that property has completely changed her life, offering her the financial security and stability we all crave.
With 11 properties in South Africa and the USA, Robin has a clear passion for investing. Having had to deal with non-paying tenants and all the typical landlord nightmares, Robin believes in the importance of creating strategies that minimise risk. He’s committed to furthering his knowledge and skills, while giving back to the community through several charity foundations and events. Being the first male pre-school teacher in the country, Robin soon realised that the same things that made him a great teacher could help him to be a great property investor – and it seems to ring true.
Lehan le Grange
While everyone was afraid of investing, having to bear the brunt of the global economic crash, Lehan decided he wanted to invest in his financial freedom. After doing their homework and research, Lehan and his wife purchased a Cape Town CBD apartment in 2011. They’ve come a long way, now owning 7 properties in Cape Town and Johannesburg. For Lehan, property has always been a way to enrich his and those around him’s life. He believes that doing your research, staying on top of trends and news, and finding the right partners (and, of course, properties) are the secrets to building wealth through property.
Owning 10 properties both within South Africa and abroad, Marc focuses on entry-level residential properties. His property journey started in 2000, when he purchased his primary residence. Immediately, however, he decided to split the property in two and rent out the second unit. Having had to deal with the pitfalls of letting agencies through his own investments, Marc decided to start his own niche letting agency, specialising in properties let out by investors. He explains that property has changed his life, allowing him to take control of his wealth and secure a future for himself and those he cares about.
Thabani owns six properties in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KZN and North West. At this stage, he chooses to focus on residential property, having invested in both student housing and entry-level homes. His main considerations when choosing a property are location and rental demand, something that has served him well. Thabani purchased his first property in 2010, but explains that his investment journey started in 2015 when he purchased his first buy-to-let. Thabani believes that property has given him a sense of ownership and accountability, while allowing him to support and help his family where needed.
